Summary of CMC for Language Acquisition and Intercultural Learning
The purpose of this article was to explore CMC definitions and to determine the relationship between CMC and intercultural interaction in language learning. CMC refers to the computer-mediated communication which involved technologies to use it and there are various definitions of that particular term. Besides, CMC is one of the tools that helps other to develop language skill, intercultural learning, and last but not least is digital literacy.
In the respect of Dr. December, CMC can be defined as a process that involves people to create, exchange and perceive information through network telecommunications systems. In general, CMC is a process where people will interact, exchange and perceive information about culture, opinions, history and etc. All of those things can be access through computer networking tools such as E-mails, Blogs, Wikis, Chat rooms, audio and video conferencing. According to Dehghanian & Azizi (2011), the more students learn a language the better they are in interaction with others (teacher-student and student-student interaction). It is because they are more aware of others sensitivity of culture and social mores. Other than that, students gain a lot of meaningful contents through CMC. Besides, CMC is authentic material aids and experience for teachers and students in the learning process.
Apart from that, CMC may reduce the time constraints and also place and at the same time, it can be accessible everywhere and anywhere whenever there are internet connections. Besides that, people manage to exchange message one another privately or not. Other than that, they able to spread message freely through the public bulletin boards for everyone to read. CMC technologies help others to engage and interact simultaneously either in a small or large group.
In this sense, CMC has greater influence to the intercultural interaction in language learning which it becomes one of the easier tools that assists learners to learn a new language in enjoyable and meaningful ways. Thus, the use of CMC for language learning helps others to enhance language skills, intercultural communicative competence, lifelong learning skills and digital literacy.
