Computer-Mediated Communication & ESL

  • It is any form of communication or interaction between two or more people via separate computers  over network connection.
  • Also known as a process where people can interact, exchange perceive information, culture thought, history and etc. by using computer medium networking tools.


CMC in Education
  • It started late 1980, then in 1990s Communication CALL been introduced.
  • CALL then become widespread through the use of Email and Forum.
  • Besides, this method is implemented for long-distance teaching/ learning.


Types of CMCAsynchronous

Asynchronous CMC (not immediate respond)
- E-mails
-blogs

Synchronous CMC (immediate respond)
-Video/audio conferencing


Advantages CMC

-authentic communication
-no distance barries
-make colloboration learning easier (Google Doc, Google Drive, Blogs, Messenger)



Disadvantages CMC
-lack of real human contact
-problem with access to technology (mostly in rural area)
